I work from my Northern California studio in the Sierra foothills, documenting subjects throughout the west.  My work is seen and read in publications such as Sierra Heritage Magazine, Sacramento Historical Journal, Communications Technology, and and Delta Sky West magazine. Topics have included “Flyfishing Hot Creek,”, “The Coyotes of Yosemite Valley,” and “A year in the Life of a Vineyard and Winery.”  My images were featured in an exhibition in the Governor’s wing of the California State Capital in May, 2010, and my work was awarded best in show at the Art Place gallery in Lincoln, California in March of 2011.

My documentary film, “Power To The People,” tells the story of Lester Pelton, the mining camp tinkerer who invented the waterwheel that made it feasible to generate electricity from falling water.  The film was a selection of the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in 2014.

My documentary, “Saving Auburn Ravine,” highlights the efforts of local activists to save a wild salmon run on their local stream.  It was a selection of the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in 2016.

My current projects include a documentary film titled “Auburn Dam: The Dam That Never Was.”   I am also restoring a 70 year old vintage film that documents the construction of  Folsom Dam.  And if two ongoing projects aren’t enough, I am also producing the film “Hemphill, the Next Six Miles”.

I teach documentary photography at Sierra College, and am a founding director of the Friends of Auburn Ravine, (FAR).

In a previous lifetime I was the founder and CEO of Netstream, and the COO of Phoenix Fiberlink.  We built the first fiber optic ring around Silicon Valley.

I am the author of two books. “Historic Powerhouses of the Sierra Nevada” details the aesthetic and cultural legacy left by engineers and architects who pioneered California’s hydroelectric industry. My novel is about the early days of the CIA. Set in the deserts of New Mexico, it is called “The Legend of Roswell.”

I can be contacted a number of ways. My email address is:  steverhubbard@gmail.com  My phone number is 916-409-5921.
